Coastal Erosion is caused mostly through the Forces of Nature.  The Seasons run their natural course, regardless of human planning.  Although human planning may cause problems when Nature has to find a way to by-pass their efforts in order to flow naturally!


  1. Tons of sand swept away by Spring Tides.
  2. Big seas with large waves.
  3. Strong winds.
  4. Seasonal storms with wind and rains.

These are a few of nature’s ways that causes erosion and change in coastal formations.

Most inhabitants near the shore assumes that the shoreline never changes, but billions of years of Geological History, shows that Coastal Areas are the least constant features on the Planet’s surface.

Human measures were taken to safeguard homes, businesses, holiday resorts, swimming areas and even mining and agricultural activities.

4 of these human measures are:

  1. Artificial sand berns; artificially produced sand is used to build different types of structures.
  2. Breakwaters; rock or concrete armor units placed strategically to break the force of the waves.
  3. Groynes; similar to breakwaters. Groynes can be placed in a long row or in separate shorter rows.
  4. Seawalls; there function is to contain soil and prevent it from eroding in the water.

These are all Engineered Structures trying to fix reclining shore surfaces and beach fronts.  But, reducing erosion at one point only causes more erosion at another.  Fixed structures cannot survive when the shoreline moves inevitably.

Research showed that the sea surface temperature is higher, the sea level is higher and that more frequent and intense storms can be expected.

  1. Collect, record and analyze coastal data before planning and undertaking coastal protection initiatives.
  2. Implement recommendations from planning done after research and follow instructions regarding all control structures and beach nourishment work
  3. Ensure that all future ocean and beach fortification and preventative structures are approved by central City Planning Committee before commencing in building it.

The outcome will be:

  1. Beaches and dunes are managed to protect public property
  2. Private property owners will understand their responsibilities in protecting their own properties.
  3. 3. A rock sea wall along urban sections of the shoreline will protect infrastructure.
  4. 4. All new development will be set back to allow the natural coastal processes.

The coast is a Dynamic, sometimes very inhospitable environment.  A Holistic Approach, understanding and taking in account all influences and their long-term movement, should be taken.
